Hi, everyone! It's been a super long month for me and I haven't gotten anything I planned to do scrapwise. So I don't have a new product to announce, but I did want to let you know about a special event we're having at DSDI!

October is Breast Cancer awareness month, and you've probably noticed pink everywhere - businesses from office supplies to donut shoppes have been creating products specially designed to raise awareness ad funds to this important cause. And the ladies at Digi Scraps Drive-In have stepped up to the plate. Not only have the created a beautiful charity collab kit, but they built an entire weekend event around it.

The Charity Scrapathon runs from October 21 o 24. Anyone can scrap along, but to be eligible for the prizes, you need to have purchased the charity collab kit.

Have fun riding the train!

I love my Android phone!!

So a few months ago, it was time to upgrade our phones. I really really wanted an iPhone, I already had an iPod touch, both my siblings and most of my friends had iPhones, and I was so excited for apps. But, when we started really looking into it, iPhones are EXPENSIVE! And my tech loving husband really wanted to go Android. Once we found Droids on sale for $19.99 with a new contract, the deal was sealed. And it's taken a bit of a settling in period, but I am in love with this phone! Today, I am going to share with you my favorite apps! If you aren't a tech geek, it's hard to find a good list of apps for your Droid. These are apps I use everyday! I'm not going to go into depth on Facebook (I use the stock app) or Gmail, lol. I only use the stock camera app. I would definitely suggest going to the market and downloading a bar code scanner before you start reading. Many of the apps have QR codes (little black and white boxes) and you can scan them right off your computer screen with your phone!

1. Shortyz Crossword Puzzles - This game is easily the most used thing on my phone! It has a list of crossword puzzles that download everyday. Between 3 and 9 new puzzles everyday! I have yet to run out of new puzzles to do, it has a ton of settings to customize everything and it pretty much blows every other crossword game out of the water. And the best part, it's completely free!

2. Our Groceries - This app is really cool because it syncs with everyone's phone and the internet. So everyone who has an Android phone, iPhone, Blackberry, or web access can add things to your shopping lists. (The main list holder has to give everyone else access via email) This is super helpful for us, because we can just add things to the list when we run out of them and then either one of us can shop on the way home from work. Also, completely free!

3. Touiteur - I am completely addicted to Twitter, so when I got this phone, I played with a TON of Twitter apps. This one wins for mindlessly easy navigation, color coding for important tweets, and it just looks really nice! It also holds the last place that you read, so you don't miss any tweets. I do have the official Twitter app installed as well, because it integrates with the phone book, which I really like. There is a free and a paid version of this and I have no idea what the paid app is for, lol!

4. Slacker Radio - Ok, there are a lot options out there for radio on your phone. I also have Pandora and iheartradio installed. I almost exclusively use Slacker though. I love that you have the option to tweet when you favorite a song (need to set it up online) and it plays a lot more new music. Pandora is my husband's pick, because he likes older music and you can make custom stations on your phone. I really love the idea behind the iheartradio app and it's awesome to use if I'm at home and not moving my phone, but it doesn't work as well if my phone is in motion, which doesn't help in the car. All of these apps are free!

5. DoubleTwist - One of my biggest drawbacks for switching to Android was my music. My music was almost exclusively on iTunes and I could not figure out how to get it onto my phone. This app works with your computer and is literally iTunes for your Android phone. It is AMAZING. It imports your iTunes lists, custom playlists, and videos and allows you to sync your music and things to your phones just like iTunes. Syncing used to be really slow and it may still be when you first start using it, but a recent update made it much speedier. This is the best mp3 player I've found for Android and the integration with iTunes makes it super familiar and easy to use. This is in beta and it's free for now, but it won't be forever!

6. Kindle - it's Kindle, for your phone! I love this one, though I haven't had much time to use it lately. You can scale the size of the letters and the brightness of the screen. I got used to reading on the small screen quickly and there are a good amount of free and low cost books available for you to try it out! The app is free, the books cost money.

7. Photoshop Express - I love this app because it's super easy to get photos from my phone to my computer this way. All you need to do is sign up for an account at photoshop.com and then you will be able to upload photos from your phone to the photoshop website and from there you can download the photos to your computer or post them on the web. This app is free and the only thing I don't love about it is, it only works with the stock camera. If you download a camera app, it won't find those. You can send the photos from the gallery in your phone straight to Picasa, Facebook, Twitter or email though, but not all of those are "hi res"

Games for Me:

* Word Feud - just like Words with Friends, I play the free version with no issues. (I'm lauracw, if you want to play!) I recently bought Word Wise, which says you can play cross platform, Android and iPhone, but it's not a slick looking at Word Fued.

* Fruit Ninja - you slash fruit with a sword, I know it sounds lame, but it's super fun! This app costs $1

* Jewels - this app is like Bejeweled, it free and a great time waster!

* Angry Birds Lite - this game is super fun and addicting, currently it's in beta testing so only a limited free version is available

Games for Kids (well, my 4 yo):

* Kids Connect - Katelyn adores connect the dots and I like this one because it snaps to the dots and then shows a picture of what you've made. We have the free version of this and a few of their other games and these are her top games!

* Memory Games - You can get pretty much any kind character memory game, Katelyn's favorite is a Disney Princess one

* Preschool Learning - another game where we are only playing the free version, but there is a paid version as well. There are four games in this one and Katelyn really likes the one where she can write letters.

Wow, that's a lot of stuff, lol!! I have never had an issue with any of the games I am recommending here. I am using a rooted Motorola Droid on Verizon.

My daughter recently started her first season of soccer! She is so excited and so are we! Of course, I needed a kit to scrap all my photos!

I am so excited to show this new kit to you! I really love to Twitter. I use it as a mini blog. All the cute things my daughter says and does all day, all the funny stuff I run across on the web, all the fun digiscrap things I'm doing, all end up on my Twitter. I use Twitter to stay on top of what's happening with my friends and to make my life a million times easier by updating my Facebook and Myspace pages with one tweet. Considering such a huge part of my online life is focus around Twitter, it was only a matter of time before I knew I needed a Twitter kit! My pal, Manda, from Nibbles Skribbles was a super collab partner for this (considering I talk to her on Twitter all day long, lol!)

So, I've kind of lost my designing mojo here lately, and I'm really looking forward to July, when I'll have a lot more free time to design in! And although I haven't been designing much, I did find some time to scrap! I love reading the GSO blog, it is an awesome source of inspiration. A few weeks ago, I found this completely awesome LO on there, and I added it to my inspiration file, because I KNEW I wanted to scraplift it!

Then, I won a $10 GC to SirScrapalot's store! Can you say excited!!! I have been drooling over his Up, Up, and Away kit for weeks now, so I knew exactly what I wanted to buy!

I literally spent a WEEK scraplifting the LO, there are a TON of layers there, but I am sooo happy with the result!

And then, what should appear in my google reader? But a blog with a link back to this FREE template!!

And since I love it so much, I thought I'd link you up to the blog, lol! The download was still active as of 6 pm today. I don't know how long they keep them up there!

I may have one more post like this one coming, I have another LO to work on here soon, and I'm still not feeling "design-y" lol!

Rounded Corner Photos...

National Scrapbook Day!! Woohoo!

So I was super excited for NSD this year! My daughter's birthday party usually ends up being right in the middle of it, and I don't have time to do anything fun. This year, because her birthday is on Monday, I scheduled her party for next weekend. So I was all prepped to spend my whole day at www.digiscrapsdrivein.com playing along with the Scrapathon. But tragedy struck yesterday, when my laptop suddenly informed me that I had 10 minutes of battery life remaining? Huh?! My battery stopped charging a long time ago and my laptop is always plugged in. After a few frantic minutes, and a little help from my mom's identical laptop top (she's a copy cat, lol!), I realized my cord had quit working! The cord to my laptop with all my new scrapping goodies AND my Photoshop. Sigh. NSD is just not meant to be for me! But luckily for you, I was able to upload my part of this super blog train before the catastrophe!

Snow!!

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with snow. I absolutely love to watch it fall. It makes everything look so pretty! And if I could stay home the whole time, I think I would really love it! But since I have a job, that doesn't ever close or have snow days, I pretty much hate it. Driving in snow is about my least favorite thing ever. Living in Ohio, we get one of two options in winter. Absolutely no snow....or mountains of it. At the moment, we have almost a foot accumulated. My three year old thinks it's probably the coolest thing ever....we rolled down a hill in the snow today. Sometimes it's fun to just be 3!

Today, I'm taking a break from telling you all about my awesome grab bag, to share a kit that is PERFECT for snow and little girls! It's called "Sweater Weather" by the awesome Sir Scrapalot and you can find it at Polka Dot Plum, along with many of his other cute kits!

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm going to take you on a little detour this week into "the way I scrap" and give you some tips for extending the life of kits you already have and/or scrapping with tricky pictures. Today's LO is of a really cool experience we had at the Cincinnati Zoo this winter. They actually take the penguins on a Penguin March and you get to see the penguins out of their cage, not even 2 feet from you!! It is a very neat thing to see and worth braving the weather for! Now, I really wanted to scrap this...but I had two problems. I don't know about you, but I don't have a lot of winter zoo kits...ok I don't have any! And I wanted to put a lot of pictures on the LO, so I wouldn't have much room for elements. I started with kraft paper, because that matches everything! And I new I wanted to use blue and yellow paper, because the blue is winter-y and the yellow matches the penguins. I thought I was going to put the pictures on the rounded edge rectangles, but that didn't leave anywhere for the paper to go, so I decided to put the paper on the rectangles. Only all blue and yellow was a little distracting, so I added in some black. I have a real thing about tilting pictures on the canvas...I need to work on that...but for this LO I went ahead and tilted the pictures and added an edge. I accidentally journaled SO much that there wasn't room for a title at the bottom, so I used the last photo slot for the title. Since I wanted it to balance out, I used a script font with my "match any kit I swear" alpha that you can find in the Grab Bag!

And then since I loved the LO so much....I made it into a template for you to download! : )

I have to confess that I am NOT doing a P365/52 or even P12 project. I want to, but I never get motivated! That doesn't stop me from wanting to scrap tons of random photos though. And sometimes you'll find a paper you LOVE even though you aren't quite feeling the elements or there just isn't a particular kit for a photo you want to scrap. Or you may have a kit you LOVE but used way too much and all your LO's look the same, and then you might have to do that completely scary thing, I try to avoid at all costs...mix up your kits?! If you're like me, the thought of scrapping with more than one kit on a LO is daunting and more than a little nerve wracking. Over the next few days, I'm going to have some examples of how I've solved these problems AND some free templates!!

For today's LO I needed to scrap bowling pictures, but I didn't have a bowling kit. After searching all through my stash, I found a really fun "retro" paper from a Shabby Pickle collab and decided to use it as my background for the pictures. I LOVE to journal and the patterned background makes writing hard to read, so I thought I'd better use a mat. I'm obsessed with round edge rectangles right now, so that's what shape I made the mat. I wanted to use my usual white mat, but the LO looked too light and I had this really fun kraft paper from my P365 Basic Papers so I went with that instead. Then, clustering photos is really my favorite way to get a lot of pics onto the page, so I clustered them down the side and then journaled beside it. For my titled I used a special alpha from my new grab bag that will match ANY page...I promise! Then since there was SO much on the page already, I grabbed a few ribbons that looked fun against the paper and cut them up to add some interest. (If you like the ends of the ribbons...the secret to that is my grab bag as well!) And even though scrapping with all those different kits was a little scary....I ended up with a LO I love!!

How to cheat at Photoshop (easy B&W tutorial)

One of my favorite looks for a photograph is high contrast black and white. If you do a Google search for images, you will see that the blacks are really black and the white is really white. It creates an attention grabbing image, sometimes from a quite simple image. (This football picture is a good example.)Now if you Google high contrast black and white tutorials, you'll probably be greeted with a lot of confusing detailed information masks, channel mixers, adjustment layers...and you'll be like me and close the link. So, I'm going to show you how to easily get a "high contrast black and white" photo. (I put it in quotes, since this will give you a great looking effect, but isn't technically the

same thing.)

First, open a new photo. Duplicate it, then, desaturate the new layer. You can do this a number of ways, I usually just got to image>adjustments>desaturate in Photoshop. Your layers palette should now look like this:

Now, duplicate the black and white layer again. With the top layer high lighted, change the blend mode from normal to overlay. Wow! Instant High Contrast! If the effect is too strong, you can lower the opacity of the top layer. Your palette could look like this:

Now, if the effect is not as strong as you would like, you can duplicate again and continue to play with the blend modes. Other modes that work well for this are linear light and soft light. This effect works best on photos where there is a lot of light.

"High Contrast B&W"

Once you have the photo the way you want it, you can flatten it and save it as a new image OR you can keep playing! Try flattening just the B&W layers and changing the blend mode to soft light for a washed effect.

"Washed Effect"

Or you can leave the black and white layer at normal opacity and erase above the areas you want color to show through!

"B&W with color"

I hope this tutorial allows you to add some extra interest to your photos and scrapbook layouts!

I love Twitter! I've talked about my addiction here before, and the other day one of my friends, MandaK of Nibbles Skribbles, mentioned she needed some people to help her out with a kit. Christmas Wreath Ornaments

I am not a big Christmas fan. I work in retail and the stress and bad moods of most of the shoppers mixed with my own stress about trying to get everything done with zero down time and no money make this one of my most dreaded times of the year. BUT while the whole season gets me down, I absolutely love Christmas traditions. I love decorating the tree and my home especially.

When I first got married and needed a tree, we just bought a lot of generic glitter ball style

ornaments, so the tree looked festive, but impersonal. We make it a point each year to buy a new special ornament so the tree will eventually be a snapshot of our lives. So we have the first Christmas together ornament and Parents to Be '05 and this year our special purchase was a letter K, because our daughter is learning her letters and she LOVES to point out K's everywhere we go. (Her name is Katelyn, lol.) When we decorate the tree at my parents, each kid has special ornaments they made in school to hang on the tree, and I couldn't wait to be able to hang Katelyn's special ornaments on the tree...so I decided to have her help me make some as gifts! Each year, I make an ornament with Katelyn's picture in it, and she colors a picture on the back. It's really fun as we're decorating the tree to compare the pictures as she grows and her coloring "skills" on the back! I'm going to share with you how we made the ones this year!

Photo Wreath Ornaments

you will need:

*wreaths (click the link to get the ones I used or check out a craft store)

*manila folder or heavy cardstock (for a backer)

*glue (a glue gun is ideal, but I used clear craft glue)

*scissors

*photos

Step 1

If you use my wreath, wallet sized photos will work great for one kid. You might want to choose 2x3 size if you have a group photo. I just printed the photos with my printer, all on one sheet. Then I traced the outer edge of the wreath around the photo and cut a little inside the lines to make the picture fit.

Step 2

I also traced the outline of the wreath onto a manila folder and had Katelyn color inside the lines. If your child is big enough to scribble, go ahead and let them help! When she was all finished coloring, I cut those out too.

Step 3

Now you just assemble! I put glue around the inner edge of the wreath and pressed it down onto my picture. Then I glued the outer edge of the picture and pressed that down on the manila folder circles. Are you still with me, lol! When all the glue dries, you'll have an adorable ornament OR pin!

***at this point, I should tell you to forgive my terrible pictures! I decided to do this on the spur of the moment and I forgot to plan for good lighting***

My mom is wearing hers on her jacket, and mine looks quite cute on my tree! If you don't have munchkins, you could easily type up a Christmas quote or use your favorite Christmas card image.

So I've had a lot of free time this week. But something about summer time makes me want to spend of all it lounging around, and not working! I've gotta get a handle on that, lol! I have lots of stuff to show you now, though!

First up, did you know we have lots of challenges at MSS each month? And even better, your challenge participation can earn you up to $5 to spend on anything in the shop!! I used this beautiful fantasy style kit, Into the Mirror, by Ella Designs, to play along with our Font Challenge. Here is my layout for that:

Where have I been....

Well, that's an excellent question. And the answer is...um, well...around, lol! Summer weather is here and it is KILLING my motivation to sit at the computer all day. And that's probably a good thing. Never fear! I have a kit that should be out for the weekend and a super idea for my next project...plus some CU stuff on the way. I've also been scrapping, A LOT, which is a step I skipped when I started designing and it's been really nice. I am making a book for my daughter of this year.

I have thought about this blog a lot and I think I might pop in from time to time with more personal stuff. I am leary of putting my life online, but I miss blogging, so we'll see what happens! I do have a layout to show you though! And a SALE!!

I attended a speedscrap hosted by my friend, Sarah, around Mother's Day, and here is my layout:

Has your week been as long as mine? I haven't blogged in FOREVER and that's because I've been in a total funk and I haven't done any work in FOREVER. Lucky for you, none of my friends have been slacking! Some FABULOUS sales have landed in my email today and I am going to share them with you! Me... I will be enjoying my on-going love affair with my laptop. I don't get much done when my DH is off, which is unfortunately during the week (wed and thurs). I might go out and do a bit of yard work... it has been gorgeous and hot out this week. I could use the sun, too! I am starting to look transparent. Yikes.

IRL, name dropping is yucky and annoying! I don't know what the web version of it is...link dropping, perhaps? But I have it bad! So today is my 5 year wedding anniversary with my husband! He had to work today, so we are celebrating tomorrow. And I am so excited, because it's finally warm enough to go to the zoo!! I can't wait! And I think it's been effecting my work this week!

Spring Cleaning!

It is a beautiful day here! I am so excited that it is almost spring time! Only 3 more days until the first day of spring!! Over the next few days I am going to be doing some spring cleaning, hopefully culminating a pretty new blog makeover! (I love this one, but it feels kind of winter-y). What does this mean for you?? I am going to be retiring some of my old blog freebies to make space in my 4shared files for new stuff...and I'm going to be cleaning out my hard drives of all the freebies I've been making for my product testing and forgetting to post!! So no worries...change is good!!

It's Superbowl Sunday!! I have to tell you that I am way more excited for the food and the fun party I'm about to head off to than the actual game...but first, I wanted to show you some fun stuff from my sponsers (lol!) and give you a freebie!!! Snow Day!!

We have been sick the last few days here. Katelyn has rotavirus and almost had to go to the hospital on Monday. She has been soo pitiful. Her absolute favorite thing is snow and I am so sad, because we literally have two feet of it and she isn't feeling good enough to go play. I hope she gets better before it all melts! But hopefully, your munchkins are enjoying their snow day (if you live in Ohio, like me!) I have a freebie for you in honor of my snow day and a special sale! Why I love layer styles and a Freebie!!

So the other day, someone asked what Photoshop feature I just could not design without, and it only took a minute to decide on layer styles! I love the ease and versatility, not to mention the speed! Soo much faster than an action! I could go on for hours about my favs, and somewhere on here is a huge blog post about my fav MSS styles (Pillowgirl's money saving all in one glitter and Sir's speedy element helper, Pieced) but today I want to show you two that I recently had the opportunity to test for MegaDoodle Inspired and Bannerwoman. First off, I have to confess that the MegaDoodle action, Stuffing, didn't intially inspire me. It's not my usual style. But I happened to be snooping around at the Scrappin' Cop blog and I found some templates that were just begging to be made fuzzy!! And they turned out soo cute! My favorite is the Valentine Bear, in fact, he has every one of my fav styles! I used Pillow's glitter on the arrow, Sir's Pieced on the wings, obviously, his body is fuzzy, and I used a variety of Bannerwoman felts and chipboard for the rest! The Stuffing layer style is easily recolored by adding a color layer over the stuffing layer and the download even includes a tutorial for fuzzing edges, which I didn't use here.
